Return of the Boise Valley People
THE 2013 RETURN OF THE BOISE VALLEY PEOPLE
The ROBVP event was June 13 to 16, 2013. Each tribe set up booths at Quarry View Park. The tribes had a walking parade to start the afternoon against a backdrop of Eagle Rock, clear blue skies and a light wind. Some carried tribal flags, while others remembered ancestors or veterans with banners – it was a colorful display to honor the tribal people.
After tribal leaders spoke about the significance of the Boise Valley, an honor song was sung to remember the late Terry Gibson, Shoshone-Paiute chairman, along with other tribal leaders.
During the cultural presentations, Kenton Dick of Burns Paiute explained their oral history how they roamed southeastern Oregon, western Idaho in small groups. They lived on deer, rockchuck, salmon and rabbit, along with roots and berries.
Fort McDermitt representatives prepared chokecherry pudding, they also had a cultural display featuring a hut made of grass. June Racehorse and Sasha Jones did a demonstration on willow cradleboards for the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes. Rosie Tom from the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs had a display of baskets, berries and other traditional items.
The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes cultural demonstration was of the buffalo, shake and feast dances. Forrest Broncho, Lyman Dixey, Jordan Plentyhawk and Young Chief Washakie did the dances while Nelson Fred, Verlin Gould, Candy Titus and Lee Juan Tyler sang the songs.
